City of Centralia Veteran Affairs Committee met March 14.

Here is the minutes provided by the committee:

The meeting was called to order at 4:00 p.m. by Chair Smith. All stood and stated the Pledge Of Allegiance. Members Present: Vernell Burris, Ann Chappell, Butch Mathus, Jim Murphy, Bill Smith, and Wayne Sensel

Members Absent: Bill Helpingstine, Howard Jones, Hugh Moran, Judy Sutherland, Michael Young, and Aarons (Emeritus Status)

Administrative Staff Present: Rose Aldag-McVey, Economic Development Director

PUBLIC COMMENT- Kayla Estes, Americorps VISTA Land of Lincoln Legal Aid, shared resource information.

MINUTES - A motion was made by Burris and second by Murphy to approve the minutes from the February 14, 2019 meeting, with all in favor, the motion carried.

TREASURY REPORT - The account balance as of February 28, 2019 remains $3,306.56 with no revenue or expenditures during February reported Aldag-McVey. Mathus moved and Murphy second a motion to approve the financial report as presented, with all in favor, the motion carried.

ONGOING BUSINESS – Mathus reported two flags are mounted on Broadway and Locust to test flag mounted bracket options. Aldag-McVey was asked to provide the flag placement and removal schedule.

Sutherland was not available to present a visual of a gray granite four-foot monument of the Korean War Memorial for Fairview Park.

Veteran Parade donation solicitation will take place Saturday, June 1 and June 8 from 9 am – 1 pm. The City has approved the request to solicit at the intersection of Broadway and Pullen Boulevard, Vernell will coordinate for time at IGA, Chappell for time at ACE, Aldag-McVey for time at Buchheit, and US Post Office.

NEW BUSINESS – Open Meeting Act information was distributed, Committee members were asked to complete training or if already complete, to forward their training certificate to the City of Centralia’ Clerk.

Veteran Parade participation and awareness was discussed. Murphy moved and Chappell second a motion to request the Council approve an 8th grade essay contest of ‘What July 4th means to me’ which would be judged by the Committee with the prize being a pizza party for the winner’s homeroom and to ride in the parade.

Previously a representative from an organization/club at Kaskaskia College would attend meetings. Aldag- McVey was asked to contact Carrie Hancock regarding the organization and encourage their representative’s attendance at meetings and the chance to participate during the public comment portion of the meeting.

OPEN DISCUSSION – Chappell was thanked for bringing homemade rolls and a poem.

With no further business to discuss a motion was made by Burris and second by Murphy to adjourn the meeting, with all in favor, the motion carried.
