City of Centralia Veteran Affairs Committee met Feb. 14.

Here is the minutes provided by the committee:

The meeting was called to order at 4:00 p.m. by Vice Chair Mathus. All stood and stated the Pledge Of Allegiance.

Members Present: Vernell Burris, Ann Chappell, Bill Helpingstine, Howard Jones, Butch Mathus, Hugh Moran, Wayne Sensel, Judy Sutherland

Members Absent: Jim Murphy, Bill Smith, Michael Young, and Aarons (Emeritus Status) Administrative Staff Present: Rose Aldag-McVey, Economic Development Director PUBLIC COMMENT- none

MINUTES -

A motion was made by Burris and second by Moran to approve the minutes from the November 11, 2018 meeting, all in favor, motion carried.

TREASURY REPORT -

After the ‘thank you’ to Veterans ad which ran in The Shopper at a cost of $36, the account balance is $3,306.56 as of January 31, 2019 noted Aldag-McVey. Chappell moved and Sensel second a motion to approve the financial report as presented, all in favor, motion carried.

ONGOING BUSINESS –

Mathus reviewed flag mounted bracket options which included mounting the holder to a block of wood which included routed tracks or two drilled holes for nylon UV black straps or metal brackets. These options will be mounted and tested on Broadway. Jones moved and Chappell second a motion to test the mounting options to determine which are most effective, all in favor, the motion carried.

Sutherland presented design options for the Korean War Memorial at Fairview Park. Sensel moved and Burris second a motion for Sutherland to bring back a visual of a gray granite four-foot monument at $1,600 with captions, all in favor, the motion carried.

NEW BUSINESS –

Hugh Moran was warmly welcomed to the Committee as he replaced Stachowski. The DAR was thanked for their donation to purchase 100 flags. This was due to a $1,000 donation made by the Centralia Township High School Class of 1956 to DAR. Thanks to the American Legion for ordering the flags. The VFW sews Veteran names onto the flags. Jones moved and Burris second a motion to request the City Council show special recognition to the DAR, all in favor, the motion passed.

July 4 Veteran Parade donation solicitation and heavy planning will begin after Easter. After discussion, the Committee asked Aldag-McVey to request two June roadblock options of June 29, June 15 or June 22.

OPEN DISCUSSION –

Mathis was presented with a flag which included his name, as a special ‘thank you’ for his support of Veterans and Veteran recognition activities.

Burris asked for additional publicity for Veterans. The DAR donation was carried in the Sentinel, The Shopper, and on WJBD radio. Social media is being used to promote Veteran activities; the Facebook page of Centralia Veteran Affairs Committee promotes local activities.

City developed Veteran Benefits Summary Guide brochures were distributed. Local businesses which are Veteran owned are eligible for a logo to place at their business. This is available through the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs’ Veteran Entrepreneurship Logo Program. The Committee recommended this be announced at the City Council.

With no further business to discuss a motion was made by Burris and second by Chappell to adjourn the meeting, all in favor, motion carried.
