Illinois State House District 115 issued the following announcement on July 16
State Representative Terri Bryant (R-Murphysboro) was notified late last week that Illinois’ Governor has signed HB 1475 into law. Rep. Bryant, a long-time supporter of the National Epilepsy Foundation says the law will better protect students with epilepsy that experience a seizure while at school.
“I want to thank first my colleagues in the House and Senate, and now the Governor for recognizing the need for schools and parents to have a plan in place for students that suffer epileptic seizures during school or during extracurricular activities,” Bryant said. “HB 1475 requires the parent or guardian of a student with epilepsy seeking assistance with epilepsy-related care in a school setting to submit a seizure action plan with the student’s school. The new law also requires that a delegated care aide perform the activities and tasks necessary to assist a student with epilepsy in accordance with the student’s seizure action plan.”
Jefferson County resident and long-time epilepsy awareness advocate Richard Stubblefield joined Rep. Bryant in Springfield when she presented HB 1475. Richard and Carolyn Stubblefield’s daughter Sarah passed away at an early age due to complications from a seizure caused by epilepsy. Mr. and Mrs. Stubblefield have joined lobbying efforts on Epilepsy Advocacy Day in Springfield for several years.
“I want to thank Mr. Stubblefield for coming up to Springfield to advocate for such a worthy cause,” Bryant said. “I know that Richard and Carolyn carry this banner very close to their hearts and I appreciate their passion and their support for this effort. My hope is that this new law will help save lives, better protect students, and raise the level of education about epilepsy in our schools.”
