Taylorville Memorial Hospital issued the following announcement on July 12.
Taylorville Memorial Hospital hosted a Hands-On Healthcare session designed to help high school and college students as well as adult community members learn more about nursing as a career.
The free session was held on July 9 at 6 p.m. in the Janice Hopper Auditorium at TMH. Attendees had an opportunity to learn about nursing in three different areas, giving them a well-rounded view of the nursing profession. In a visit to Acute Care, they learned about general nursing practice, including vital signs, IV pumps and access of an infusaport. When visiting the outpatient surgery department, the participants enjoyed donning surgical attire and learning about sterile techniques, positioning of patients and the state of the art equipment. In the emergency department, they were able to run a mock code and were able to see how an EZ-IO is inserted (an IV into the bone) in an emergency setting.
“We are so pleased with how well this session went,” said Becky Erlenbush, RN, nurse educator at TMH. “We were able to engage members of the community and share with them a little about what nursing is like. We look forward to hosting more sessions in the future.”
The next Hands-On Healthcare will focus on therapy and will be held this fall.
