Dear Friend,
I want to thank each and every one of my friends, family members neighbors, colleagues and fellow Illinoisans for the hundreds of calls, texts, and social media messages you sent to offer thoughts, prayers, and positive vibes as I am now recovering from a 2nd neck surgery in the last month. I am happy to report that last week’s procedure was successful and I am now working on my rehabilitation.
This job is such a blessing to me…and any time that I miss honestly drives me a little bit crazy! But, I am following doctor’s orders and getting as much rest as much as I can while mixing in some appearances and keeping up with the news.
So, to get you up to date with what’s new, this week’s Bryant E News has information from the State of Illinois on how you can find cooling centers in your area during this extreme heat wave and tips to stay safe in the heat.
Also, a bill that is very close to my heart that I was proud to carry in the House was signed by the Governor into law last week. You can read more on “The Seizure Smart School Act” below.
Next week, I am joining State Rep. Patrick Windhorst, State Senator Paul Schimpf, and State Senator Dale Fowler to host a FREE senior citizens’ health and wellness fair in Carbondale. Details are below.
Finally, the Bryant Summer Reading Club “I Heart Reading”, will finish taking summer readers’ completed forms on TUESDAY JULY 31.

KEEP COOL DURING THE HEAT WAVE
The entire state of Illinois is under either a heat advisory or an excessive heat warning for the next couple of days. It is important that local residents take steps to protect themselves and those around them from these dangerous weather conditions.
The state of Illinois has established a series of cooling centers in facilities around the state. To find the cooling center in your area, visit www.keepcool.illinois.gov.
Here are some important tips for safety in the kind of extreme heat Illinois is dealing with this summer:
NEVER leave a child or a pet in a hot car, and warn children about playing in parked cars
Avoid strenuous outdoor activity, especially during the hottest hours of the day
If you must work outside, wear sunscreen, take frequent water breaks and cool down in the shade as much as possible
Check on your neighbors, particularly the elderly and those without air conditioning
Know the signs of heat exhaustion and what to do
Wear light weight, loose-fitting clothing and drink plenty of fluids
Make sure your outdoor pets have plenty of cool water to drink

PRESS RELEASE: Rep. Bryant’s ‘Seizure Smart School Act’ Signed into Law
Murphysboro…State Representative Terri Bryant (R-Murphysboro) was notified late last week that Illinois’ Governor has signed HB 1475 into law. Rep. Bryant, a long-time supporter of the National Epilepsy Foundation says the law will better protect students with epilepsy that experience a seizure while at school.
“I want to thank first my colleagues in the House and Senate, and now the Governor for recognizing the need for schools and parents to have a plan in place for students that suffer epileptic seizures during school or during extracurricular activities,” Bryant said. “HB 1475 requires the parent or guardian of a student with epilepsy seeking assistance with epilepsy-related care in a school setting to submit a seizure action plan with the student’s school. The new law also requires that a delegated care aide perform the activities and tasks necessary to assist a student with epilepsy in accordance with the student’s seizure action plan.”
Jefferson County resident and long-time epilepsy awareness advocate Richard Stubblefield joined Rep. Bryant in Springfield when she presented HB 1475. Richard and Carolyn Stubblefield’s daughter Sarah passed away at an early age due to complications from a seizure caused by epilepsy. Mr. and Mrs. Stubblefield have joined lobbying efforts on Epilepsy Advocacy Day in Springfield for several years.
“I want to thank Mr. Stubblefield for coming up to Springfield to advocate for such a worthy cause,” Bryant said. “I know that Richard and Carolyn carry this banner very close to their hearts and I appreciate their passion and their support for this effort. My hope is that this new law will help save lives, better protect students, and raise the level of education about epilepsy in our schools.”
Carbondale….Four representatives of Southern Illinois’ state legislative delegation will join together in Carbondale to host a free senior citizens health and wellness fair on July 24 from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at the Carbondale Civic Center. Members of the public and the media are invited to attend.
What: Please come to this year’s FREE senior fair to receive helpful guides, literature and other resources from a variety of state, county and local government agencies. General Assembly staff members will be on-hand to assist constituents with their state government concerns. Attendees are encouraged to sign in for a chance to win a door prize. FREE health screenings will be offered, and attendees can sign-up for FREE smoke detectors.
Complimentary refreshments will be served.
