HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital Breese issued the following announcement on Sept. 6.
Every day in Illinois, thousands of parents and caregivers travel with children in their vehicles. While some children are buckled in properly in the correct car seats for their age and size, most are not, if they are buckled up at all.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 46 percent of car seats are misused. To help combat this issue, St. Joseph’s Hospital Breese announced today its participation in Child Passenger Safety Week, a campaign dedicated to helping parents and caregivers make sure their children ride as safely as possible — every trip, every time. Child Passenger Safety Week runs from Sept. 15-21. This event is one of more than 90 in Illinois that are sponsored by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
“By attending St. Joseph’s car seat event on September 21, parents can be sure their kids are riding as safely as possible,” said Janice Gebke, Registered Nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital Breese. “The No. 1 goal is to make sure every child leaves the event safer than they arrived. CPS technicians will check the seat for secure fit, explain the law, look up recalls and more.”

“As parents and caregivers, we have a long list of things we do for our children to show our love. One of the simplest and most important things on the list should be to make sure they are in the right car seat for their age and size,” she said. “Get your car seats checked. Make certain they are installed correctly, the kids are in the right seats and are buckled correctly.”
