Illinois State House District 95 issued the following announcement on Dec. 18.
Typically, if new laws do not take effect immediately upon being signed in to law, they do so at the beginning of the next fiscal year, July 1, or the next new year, January 1, to allow residents, businesses, and regulators to prepare for its implementation. This year 256 laws are set to become effective in the State of Illinois on January 1st, 2020.
The legalization of marijuana and increase in the minimum wage (to $9.25) have been much publicized. Less well known legislation set to take effect beginning New Year’s Day will double fines for illegally passing a school bus, require rabies vaccinations for cats, provide civics education for prisoners set to re-enter society, require sex-ed classes teach the meaning of consent, and enhance the criminal penalties for violence committed in a place of worship. In addition, license plate fees are set to increase to $151.
Other legislation sponsored by Rep. Bourne, including removing the statute of limitations for prosecuting criminal sexual assault cases and a process for removing private compromising images from the internet and allowing civil means of recovering damages from so-called “revenge porn” are also set to become law.
