Taylorville Memorial Hospital issued the following announcement on Jan. 22.
Two free classes will be offered in the Taylorville Memorial Hospital Annex to the public to receive training on how to identify and respond to adults and youth showing signs of mental illness.
The first class will be held Monday, Jan. 27, and is geared toward helping adults experiencing a mental health crisis. The second class will be held Tuesday, Feb. 11, and is geared toward helping youth. Both classes will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“Healthcare is so much more than what happens within the walls of the hospital,” said Raedena Ryan, executive director of the Taylorville Memorial Hospital Foundation, which is underwriting the cost of the mental health training. “We are committed to helping our community. Through the generosity of our donors, we are able to support programs such as this.”
The foundation is covering the cost for the training manuals used in the classes for all participants who are residents of Christian County and nearby communities.
Mental Health First Aid teaches signs of addictions and mental illnesses, the impact of mental health and substance use disorders, a five-step action plan and local resources and where to turn for help.
To register for either class, call Melissa Thomas at 217-824-1601. Organizations who would like to offer the class to their employees can call 217-824-1601. There must be a minimum of five attendees.
The five hospitals of Memorial Health System and Memorial Behavioral Health are sponsoring Mental Health First Aid for communities in central Illinois.
