City of Centralia Veteran Affairs Committee met Feb. 13.

Here is the minutes provided by the committee:

The meeting was called to order at 4:30 by Chair Smith. All stood and stated the Pledge Of Allegiance.

Members Present: Vernell Burris, Ann Chappell, Michael Mulvin, Jim Murphy, Bill Smith, and Judy Sutherland Members Absent: Bill Helpingstine, Howard Jones, Butch Mathus, Hugh Moran, and Wayne Sensel Administrative Staff Present: Rose Aldag-McVey, Director of Economic Development

PUBLIC COMMENT- Tina Ford representing the Cub Scouts Pack and the Military Momma Network shared an update on the programs her groups participate.

MINUTES – The minutes from October 10, 2019, November 14, 2019, and January 9, 2020. There was no meeting in December 2019. Murphy moved and Mulvin second the motion to approve the minutes as presented. The motion carried.

TREASURY REPORT – Aldag-McVey reported the balance of $3,089.23 as of January 31, 2020. This includes donations in the amount of $300 from the VFW and $200 from Marion County Voiture No. 516 Inc. A motion was made by Burris and second by Murphy to accept the report, with all in favor the motion carried.

ONGOING BUSINESS –Replacement flags, poles, brackets, and bands are desired. Aldag- McVey and other members are gathering prices for both pole mounted and ground mounted flags. At least 70 flags were recommended by Smith for ground mounting in the circle area near the memorials in Fairview Park as it measures within the grass at approximately 760 feet with space between flags at 10 feet. Mulvin recommended spraying cotton flags with water repellant to reduce their wet weight.

Participation at the Locust Street Historical Fair on May 2 was discussed. Pullen corner is reserved for June 6, 2020 and June 20, 2020 for the American Legion Auxiliary and the DAR at ACE Hardware for solicitation.

NEW BUSINESS – The 2020 schedule of flag mounting and removals was reviewed. 4th of July parade planning will begin soon. Smith invited a local church to attend the meeting as they had expressed an interest in offering lunch after the 4th of July Parade. A letter will go to area schools regarding the 8th grade essay contest with a deadline of mid-April.

OPEN DISCUSSION – On Sunday, February 16, there will be a memorial service for Roy Aarons who had been a member of the Veteran Affairs Committee for many years.
