Vandalia Volunteer Fire Department responded to 41 calls in 2018 - 12.8 percent less than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Vandalia included 34 fires - 12 structure fires, 10 vehicle fires and 12 other fires. The fire department also responded to two calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $1,243,000 in fire loss - or about $36,559 per fire.

The department also received five false calls.

The calls resulted in one civilian fire-related death.
