Decatur could receive a zero-emissions power plant that is expected to be capable of generating 280 megawatts of relatively carbon-neutral power through the capture of carbon produced in the combustion of natural gas.
The Broadwing Clean Energy Complex would be a joint effort between Archer Daniels Midland and 8 Rivers Capital LLC. It would be located adjacent to ADM's processing complex in Decatur, according to WAND TV. The plant is planned to make use of ADM’s carbon capture and storage system to store carbon a mile and a half underground.
“I constantly work to bring more jobs to my district! This is huge!” state Rep. Sue Scherer (D-Decatur) said of the planned power plant in an April 18 post on her Facebook page.
Allam-Fetvedt cycle used in power production at the plant has been tested and proven to be capable of producing power with near-net-zero emissions at a working power plant in La Porte, Texas, according to fossilconsulting.com.
WAND TV reported that 8 Rivers has yet to make its final investment decision, though the decision is expected to be made by next year. Once that has been taken care of, the plan calls for the plant to begin operations by 2025.
