City of Centralia Veteran Affairs Committee met May 13.

IV. PUBLIC COMMENT – Mrs. Patterson presented a check from the DAR to purchase flags for the Veteran’s Affairs Commission for $1,000. Plus, another $300 donation for flags from a citizen. Discussion was made over the need to have more flags due to the damage incurred during the year.

VII. ONGOING BUSINESS
1. Fundraising – June 12th & June 19th
a. Mathus said he will get everything lined out for the road blocks.
2. 4th of July parade
a. Motion to Approve: 1st Mathus & 2nd Moran – All voted in favor.
b. Mathus mentioned the VFW train is currently being rehabbed & will be ready for the 4th of July Parade. The plan is to put the train behind the honor guard to help transport veterans participating in the parade as it should hold 10 to 12 people.
c. Discussion of the who will be the grand martial of the parade. It was determined that it should be Murphy.
i. Motion to approve Murphy as grand martial 1st Mathus & 2nd Moran All voted in favor.
3. Flag schedule 2021 – See Attached
*Emeritus
a. Are we going to leave the flags up for as long last year Smith asked. Derek requested guidance from the Veterans Commission.
4. Flag retirement with Boy Scouts
a. Normally, it happens later in the year with the Boy Scouts & DAR in Wamac city park the weekend of Wamac Fest. It is scheduled for September 11, 2021. Mathus is bringing the BBQ and DAR is bringing desserts and coordinating with the Boy Scouts.
VIII. NEW BUSINESS
1. Purchase of Flags, Flag Poles, Brackets, and Grommets etc.
i. Ulem discussed the different pipe options to use for the flag display at Fairview Park. It was decided to have American Flags down the middle in two columns with service flags in front of monuments.
ii. Sensel reported that nylon flags are$13.00 from the American Legion.
2. DAR Flag Donations
3. Approval of Trolley for 4th of July
i. The Trolley is wanted and will be at the 4th of July event.
4. Choose Time for Flag Placement for Memorial Day
i. The flags are scheduled to be put up Thursday May 27th at 10AM, and the pick up for the flags is June 1st at 10AM.
5. Approval of Memorial Day Speaker, Singer, & Minister
i. May 29th at 10AM with speaker, singer, and honor/color guard. Moran asked if we can get a PA system out there, and Derek said he will look into acquiring the PA system.
ii. Moran asked if we are having the flyer being put out in the newspaper. Derek said it should be advertised in the Sentinel.
