City of Salem Historical Commission met Jan. 17.

CALL TO ORDER
The Historical Commission met at the Salem Area Historical Museum. Chairman Luke Purcell called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. in the presence of commission members Luke Purcell, Betty Purcell, Megan Holler, Mark Larimer, Don Mills, Councilman Jim Koehler and recording Secretary Cindy Eller.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Don Mills made a motion to approve the minutes. Betty Purcell seconded the motion. All members present were in favor and the motion carried.
TREASURER’S REPORT
See attached report provided by the City of Salem Finance Director, Keli Barrow. Mark Larimer made a motion to approve the financial report. Don Mills seconded the motion. All members present were in favor and the motion carried.
CORRESPONDENCE
Chairman Luke Purcell read a letter received from Sue & Jeff Schmaltz that was received with a $1,000.00 donation to the Historical Commission. Betty Purcell noted she would send a thank you note to the Schmaltzs for their generous donation.
BUSINESS
a. Museum updates: Betty Purcell told the Commission that donations continue to come in for the museum with a large number of items coming from Allen Phillips. Purcell also noted that the Museum would open back up on Saturdays in February and she has a calendar ready so volunteers can start signing up.
b. Election of Officers: Motion was made by Betty Purcell and seconded by Don Mills to table the Election of Officers until the next meeting so more members could be present. All members present were in favor and the motion carried.
COMMISSION MEMBER’S REPORT
Betty Purcell told the Commission she would like to have an open house at the Bryan Home on March 19 which would’ve been William Jennings Bryan’s 162nd birthday. Purcell stated she would like to have it open the same hours as the Museum from 9:00 – Noon and have the home decorated and possibly serve cookies.
Councilman Koehler reported to the commission that he was working with the schools to begin teaching about William Jennings Bryan as well as commitments to bring classes to tour the Museum as well as the Bryan Home. Koehler feels this is an important part of Salem history and should be taught to the students.
Luke Purcell reported to the commission that Tabitha with the City of Salem is planning events for July 4th which coincides with the 2023 Bicentennial. Purcell feels the Historical Board should “piggy back” with the City’s event since this all day event will have bands, food trucks etc. Don Mills made a motion to share their July 4th event with the City of Salem. Meagan Holler seconded the motion. All members present were in favor and the motion carried.

Don Mills made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 5:45 p.m.
