Former Greenville University administrator and coach, Dave Holden, was honored on Sept. 13 at the inaugural running of the Dave Holden Open cross country meet, hosted by Greenville High School.
Holden, who passed away unexpectedly on Jan. 17 at the age of 60, founded the GHS cross country program and served as its coach for 15 years. His wife, Teresa, and their three children, Lindsey, Ashley, and David, were presented a plaque by GHS Athletic Director Joe Alstat just before the running of the meet named in his honor.
Holden wore many hats while employed at GU. He advanced the adult and graduate education programs, created the former GOAL (Greenville Opportunities for Adult Learning) program, oversaw the school’s compliance with NCAA rules, managed the university’s accreditation process, and served as the faculty athletic representative. He also put his coaching abilities to good use, coaching the hurdlers on the GU men’s and women’s track teams.
