Kaskaskia College Board of Trustees approves design for Vandalia Art Gallery project and new Associates of Fine Arts (AFA) Theatre Degree
The Kaskaskia College Board of Trustees met Monday, November 28, 2022, for its regular monthly meeting. Board members included Bill Hawley (Odin), Laura Wedekemper (Shattuc), Bryan Holthaus (Carlyle), Louis Kalert (Centralia), Jeff Brown (Greenville), and Jim Beasley (Centralia). Linda Stover (Centralia) and Alyssa Lurkins (Student Trustee) were absent.
Trustees reviewed and approved the proposal from Kane Insurance Agency, Inc. of Salem, IL, for property and casualty insurance services for $239,934, plus worker's compensation coverage for $104,989 and an earthquake coverage premium at $72,610. Authorization was provided to the college's Vice President of Administrative Services, Judy Hemker, to finalize and execute the purchase of insurance services from Kane Insurance Agency, Inc.
The board unanimously approved the design for the Vandalia Art Gallery project and authorized FGM Architects to proceed with professional services, including preparing construction documents and beginning the bidding processes. FGM Architects estimated the total cost of the project would be $1,011,056, which was re-appropriated to this project from assets donated to the Kaskaskia College Foundation for further improvement of the Vandalia campus. Upon approval and construction of the Art Gallery, the remaining funds for the gallery will be utilized to help maintain the gallery collection and to assist the college with future maintenance and upkeep/oversight of the gallery.
The board also reviewed the new renovation plan scope for the Automotive Technology classroom and lab areas and the new improvements to the Information Technology department before construction begins in May 2023.
The board approved the purchase of Hewlett Packard Enterprise storage and virtualization equipment from SecureData for $131,343. The Hewlett Packard Enterprise system provides the college with newer technology, better analytics, and deeper insight into system usage and maintenance, which will save on future costs.
Additionally, the board reviewed and approved the program plan for a new Associate of Fine Arts (AFA) Theatre Degree. Three new drama courses have been created to complete the AFA theatre offerings. These new courses include Performance of Literature, Play Analysis for Production, and Stagecraft. Adding theatre to the existing fine arts degree options in music, music education, art, and art education will provide KC district students with the full range of fine arts opportunities.
In personnel matters, the board approved the hires of:
• Jessica Foster for the 100% grant-funded position of Data/Budget Analyst in the Adult Education & Literacy department
• Shelby Guthrie as Assistant Professor of Nursing
• Sarah Foley as Assistant Professor of Sociology
• Sara Hanks as Controller
The board also accepted the resignation of Holly Sallee, Executive Director of Development of the Kaskaskia College Foundation.
