Greenville attorney Tom DeVore is drafting a resolution for Bond County that would reaffirm the Second Amendment rights of its residents.
DeVore is offering his services to Illinoisans who live in other counties as well.
“Iroquois County passed a resolution proclaiming it will not enforce any law passed in Illinois such as HB5855,” he said on Facebook. “I am drafting the same resolution for my County Board to consider. If anyone in the state wants to present this resolution to your county board, I can provide the draft to you. Just let me know.”
Sweeping gun rights legislation included in HB5855 just finished three hearings The bill, which will get a House vote likely in January, triggered Iroquois County to announce its jurisdiction will not enforce the legislation should it become law. “BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Iroquois County Board hereby orders that Iroquois County shall not support the enforcement of HB5855 Protect Illinois Communities Act through the use of county funds, appropriations, personnel or property. The use of these limited resources is hereby banned from enforcing HB5855.” Iroquois County’s resolution reads, Kankakee Times reported.
Todd Vandermyde, a contract lobbyist with the National Rifle Association in Illinois broke down Iroquois County’s measure on his Freedom’s Steel YouTube channel. “So what does that mean?” Vandermyde said. “Well, the sheriff's department is not going to be going out there and aiding the state police or any other agency in enforcement measures against this or any similar type of legislation, the way this resolution reads. Not only that, it doesn't look like the State's Attorney’s office is going to be able to expend any funds in the prosecution of anybody under House Bill 5855 should it become law.”
Of the 102 counties in the state, 68 have resolutions on the books supporting the constitutional rights of gun owners.
