Women's basketball maintains first place in SLIAC in win over Spalding

The women's basketball team kept pace with Webster on top of the SLIAC standings with a 71-57 win over Spalding on Thursday night in H.J. Long Gymnasium. The Panthers took control in the first quarter, establishing a 21-9 advantage, and ended up outscoring the Golden Eagles in three of the four quarters for the win.

Savana Powell-Goodman came off the bench and gave Greenville a game-high 18 points in just 19 minutes of action. She made 6-of-11 field goal attempts and all six free throws.

Starters Madelyn Stephen and Emily Reinneck also posted double figure scoring efforts. Stephen scored 16 points, and Reinneck added 12 points. Reinneck also led the squad with eight rebounds.

The Panthers allowed Spalding to tighten the score in the second quarter, holding a 34-29 five-point lead at halftime.

Greenville made the score 53-40 after three quarters and posted a 18-17 advantage in the final quarter.

GU shot 40 percent from the floor (26-of-65) and 50 percent (8-of-16) from three-point territory.

The Panthers (13-5, 6-1 SLIAC) will host Eureka on Saturday at 1 p.m. in H.J. Long Gymnasium.
