Men’s Basketball Loses in Overtime at Carroll
The Millikin University men's basketball team ended its 2022-23 season with an 81-80 overtime loss at Carroll University on February 18, 2023 in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
The game was a close one throughout with 12 lead changes and nine ties. Carroll led 41-38 at halftime, but Millikin outscored the Pioneers by three in the second half to end the game at 72-72 at the end of regulation.
Millikin used baskets from Cole Laurence and Drake Stevenson to jump out to a 77-72 advantage in overtime. Carroll then rallied to pull ahead 78-77 on an Aaron Wafford basket. Laurence then put Millikin up 79-78 with 1:53 left to play. Kobe Simpson then put the Pioneers up by one with a bucket at 80-79. Laurence went 1-2 at the free throw line with a 1:03 to go to tie the game at 80-80. Simpson hit a free throw with two seconds left to play to give the Pioneers the victory.
JT Welch led Millikin with 20 points followed by Nate Straughter with 19. Demarcus Bond added 10 points and Laurence end the game with nine points and 11 rebounds.
Simpson led Carroll with 19 points with Wafford and Evan Bland each scoring 12.
Millikin ends the season at 11-14, 4-12 while Carroll goes to 7-18, 4-12.
