TAKE BACK THE NIGHT RALLY AND WALK AT MORAINE VALLEY

Moraine Valley Community College is hosting a Take Back the Night Rally and Walk on Wednesday, April 5, 6 to 7 p.m., in Building M and the outdoor Gateway on campus, 9000 W. College Parkway, Palos Hills. This event is free and open to the public.

Take Back the Night is the oldest worldwide movement to stand against sexual violence. Various groups hold events in April, which is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and/or March, which is Women’s History Month. The college is recognizing both of these months by holding this event in early April.

The rally will start at 6 p.m. with a welcome presentation. Moraine Valley student and member of the Speech Team, Lydia Garcia, of Justice, will give a presentation, and a survivor of sexual assault will speak as well. There also will be a resource fair with local organizations including Pillars Community Health, Metropolitan Family Services, Crisis Center for South Suburbia, Anew: Building Beyond Violence and Abuse, and Moraine Valley departments such as Academic Advising, Admissions, Counseling and Career Development Center, and the Health, Fitness & Recreation Center.

Attendees also can make rally posters to hold during the walk, which will start around 6:30 p.m. when everyone will walk around campus to shatter the silence on sexual assault.

“We encourage anyone to come and help bring light to this important issue,” said Dr. Souzan Naser, Moraine Valley counselor and member of the Women’s History Month committee. “Families, local school groups, Girl Scout troops, sports teams or anyone who values creating safe environments for people in our communities will find this event fulfilling and a moving experience.”

This event is held in collaboration with the Moraine Valley Celebrating Diversity Committee and the Counseling and Career Development Center. For more information or to RSVP, contact Maria Elena Belmontez at belmontezm@morainevalley.edu.
