Hillsboro Community School District 3 Board of Education met Sept. 20

Hillsboro Community School District 3 Board of Education met Sept. 20.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

1) A special meeting of the Board of Education was called to order by President Matt Lentz, at the Hillsboro Unit Office at 7:00 p.m. The following board members were present: Matt Lentz, Brian Patton, John Lentz, Blake Furness, Kassie Greenwood, Mike Cerutti and Nathan Kirby.

2) Recognition of Audience

Tom Devore advised the board against using Working Cash Funds towards the new high school project. He stated case law allows Working Cash Funds to be used for repairs and improvements to existing buildings and is not for major school projects.

Willie Cobetto spoke on the bids and said although they came in slightly over budget they are still within striking distance.

3) Agenda Item 2.0. Consideration of Awarding Bid for Hillsboro High School Building Project

Tim Downen of Hurst-Rosche stated he was very pleased with the bids received. Both bids were from very reputable contractors, O'Shea Builders and Poettker Construction. O'Shea Builders base bid was in the amount of $23,355,480. Poettker Construction base bid was in the amount of $28,224,000. Board Member Patton understood that there were not going to be Alternate bids. Tim Downen stated he was never informed there were not going to be alternate bids. Mr. Patton also questioned why the asbestos abatement is not included in the bid. Mr. Downen said that work will be done at the end of the project and they don't ask contractors to hold bids that far out. Board member John Lentz stated the public was told $23 million and doesn't want to see it go over $30 million.

Motion made by Brian Patton, seconded by John Lentz to table Agenda Item 2.0 in to the regular scheduled October meeting in order to obtain more information. On roll call the following voted yes: John Lentz, Blake Furness and Brian Patton. Matt Lentz, Kassie Greenwood, Mike Cerutti and Nathan Kirby all voted no. Motion failed 4-3.

Motion made by Mike Cerutti, seconded by Nathan Kirby to award the bid to O'Shea Builders in the amount of $28,154,002.00 which includes the base bid and Alternate Bids 1-4. On roll call the following voted yes: Blake Furness, Kassie Greenwood, Mike Cerutti, Nathan Kirby and Matt Lentz. John Lentz and Brian Patton voted no. Motion carried 5-2.

10) Agenda Item

10.0 Adjournment.

Motion by Nathan Kirby, seconded by Kassie Greenwood to adjourn the meeting at 8:44 p.m. Voice vote. Motion carried.
