State Senator Jason Plummer recently welcomed high school students to the Illinois State Capitol as part of his Youth Advisory Council program. The program aims to provide young individuals with a firsthand experience of the legislative process and empower them to make positive changes in their communities.
Senator Plummer expressed his enthusiasm for the program, stating, “This is a chance for students to see the legislative process up close, take part in the act of crafting and passing legislation, and learn that they can have a hand in making positive changes for their community and their state.”
One of the participating students, Sophia Himsel from Highland High School, shared her reflections on the experience, saying, “I learned a lot about leadership and voicing everything that you believe in.” Another student, Willow Conn from Richland County High School, described the program as "really exciting" and highlighted the opportunity to engage with peers and simulate the role of a Senator.
Ryder Koger from Centralia High School emphasized the valuable skills gained through the program, stating, “It’s teaching me how I can work with a group better and more effectively, and how to present an argument in a more professional manner than just arguing with a friend or a parent.”
The students actively participated in activities such as touring the Capitol complex, engaging with lawmakers, and conducting a mock committee hearing to debate a proposed bill. Despite their young age, they showcased a deep understanding of legislative processes and critical thinking skills.
Senator Plummer commended the students for their engagement and knowledge, stating, “It’s always great to see and hear these students talk about the finer points of legislation and important issues, and to show how knowledgeable and engaged they are in politics.”
The Youth Advisory Council program, which is held annually, serves as a platform for high school students in the 55th Senate District to enhance their understanding of government and civic participation. Senator Plummer encourages interested students to inquire with their teachers or principals about participating in future sessions.
