State Senator Jason Plummer recently hosted his annual Youth Advisory Council at Kaskaskia College’s Education Center in Vandalia. The event, held on October 1, gathered approximately 80 students from 18 high schools across the region.

“This is a great opportunity for students to come together and develop a clearer understanding of the legislative process, learn how policies impact young people today, and even contribute to creating potential legislation,” said Senator Plummer. He emphasized the importance of engaging students in the 55th Senate District to help them understand their role in state government. “Decisions made at the local, state, and federal levels directly affect their lives.”

The day included presentations from George Evans, President of Kaskaskia College, and Joshua Morrison, a Resident Circuit Judge. They shared insights about their roles and stressed community involvement.

Cooper Dodson from Centralia High School has attended the event for three years. “I’ve enjoyed this event every year!” he said. Dodson believes it is crucial for students to have a voice in government: “For students to have a voice in government means that students know what’s going on in the world around them.”

Naomi Knapp from Breese Central Community High School expressed her interest in politics: “I really enjoy politics and want to be a politician when I grow up.” She appreciated hearing from public servants who care about people.

Students worked together to propose legislative ideas during the event. Aly Pace from Highland High School found it beneficial: “Today has been a nice opportunity to try something new and learn more about the legislative process.” She noted the importance of being informed about governmental activities.

In spring, these students will visit the Capitol to debate their proposed bill aimed at reforming Illinois' estate tax to support family-owned farms and businesses. Senator Plummer praised the creativity shown by participants: “This is one of my favorite events each year... I was impressed with their grasp of current events, policy, and their desire to present thoughtful solutions.”

Naomi Knapp looks forward to visiting the Capitol for a mock hearing: “I’m excited to see the Capitol... I’m also excited to participate in a mock hearing.”

Senator Plummer concluded by expressing his anticipation for seeing these ideas become actionable legislation during the spring session.
