A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Ashley City Council in Illinois on October 15, 2024. The request, made by us at South Central Reporter, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, seeks specific information about the city council members.
The requested records pertain to all current council members and include their names, titles, years of appointment, term lengths (2 or 4 years), and term expiration dates. We asked for this information under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140, and expressed a preference for receiving it in an electronic format.
As a media organization dedicated to gathering and reporting news to the public, access to public records is crucial for us. This information will enable us to fulfill our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
In line with our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional. We await a positive response from the Ashley City Council regarding this request.
