Republican Seth McMillan, who is running for the 48th Senate District seat, recently joined other conservatives in the state in expressing disdain for a proposed statewide 1 percent hike in property taxes.
"I do not support a statewide property tax," McMillan told South Central Reporter. "I support a property tax freeze. I believe that the 1 percent tax increase would hit families in my community hard. Additionally, I believe that there would be a negative effect on the real estate market, which is already fragile."
The tax hike was recently proposed by a trio of economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago as a way to pay down the state's massive pension debt.
McMillan believes that the tax says a lot about politicians in Illinois, namely that they would rather tax hard-working residents than make the difficult decisions needed to bring the budget back in check.
"Career politicians are unwilling to mark hard choices," McMillan said. "Spending needs to be prioritized and the state needs to live within its means."
Additionally, McMillan believes that for true reform to take place that politicians need to put reforms in place to make Illinois more competitive.
"For example, there is work to be done to our worker's compensation system," McMillan said. "We also need to eliminate estate taxes and cut the corporate tax rates."
