The apparent hypocrisy of state Sen. Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill) is the focus of a new ad from his 48th District Republican challenger, Seth McMillan.
“Andy Manar isn’t who we thought he was,” flashes on screen in large, yellow letters, followed by Manar’s own voice: “As chairman for the county board, raising taxes was not an option for us. People can’t afford it.”
On the screen, words say, “But in the Senate, Andy Manar raised income taxes. And he’ll do it again.”

The ad ends with the following words, again in large, yellow letters: “Higher taxes. More corruption. You can’t trust Andy Manar.”
McMillan's New Spending Proposal
McMillan also announced a new spending proposal that would allocate a major portion of the budget to roads and bridges, “exactly where they should be spent,” he wrote in an Oct. 4 Facebook post.
Key provisions in his new plan, detailed on his website, include ending the practice of using Road Fund dollars to pay for mass transit and using the existing 6.25 percent gas tax to help repair roads.
McMillan and Manar are on the Nov. 6 ballot for the District 48 Senate seat. The winner will represent the communities of Assumption, Benld, Bunker Hill, Carlinville, Coffeen, Decatur, Gillespie, Girard, Hillsboro, Litchfield, Mount Olive, Nokomis, Pana, Springfield, Staunton, Taylorville, Virden and Witt.
