Illinois residents are gearing up for the Thanksgiving holiday, whether celebrating at home or traveling to visit family and friends. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the American Red Cross have offered safety tips to help ensure a secure holiday experience.

Thanksgiving is noted as the leading day for home cooking fires in the United States, according to the NFPA. To prevent accidents, individuals are advised to remain in the kitchen while frying, grilling, or broiling food. Additionally, flammable items such as towels and paper should be kept away from heat sources. In case of emergencies, having a metal lid or baking sheet nearby is recommended to smother grease fires.

With more than 132 million people anticipated to travel this Thanksgiving, road safety is another key concern. Travelers should ensure their vehicles are well-maintained and pack an emergency kit with necessary supplies. Checking weather forecasts before departure is also advised. During long trips, it is important to avoid distractions, take regular breaks, and rotate drivers when possible. In case of winter weather delays or getting stuck on the road, travelers should stay with their vehicle, keep the exhaust pipe clear of obstructions, and use a brightly colored cloth as a signal for assistance.

Overall, some preparation can contribute significantly to ensuring a safe and pleasant holiday season.
