Blaine Wilhour, 107th District candidate for state representative, took a moment on Facebook on Sept. 11 to honor those lost during the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Wilhour, then a 19-year-old Army National Guard specialist, said he was put on standby and supported Operation Enduring Freedom in Germany.

“For a fleeting moment in time, this country came together – united against those who hate freedom and seek to destroy our way of life,” he wrote.

The Republican candidate, who hails from Altamont and serves on the Fayette County board, thanked first responders and soldiers for their sacrifice.

In an Aug. 30 Facebook post, Wilhour was pictured with three other state congressional candidates, all signing a pledge to refuse pensions if elected.

“Part-time public servants should never receive taxpayer-funded pensions,” he said. “Let’s put the public servant back in public service.”

Wilhour will face Democrat David Seiler and Libertarian Thadeus Freed on Nov. 6.

The 107th District includes the cities of Altamont, Centralia, Effingham, Greenville, Kinmundy, Salem, St. Elmo, Vandalia and Wamac.
