Marsha Webb, a candidate for House District 107, is making term limits a central focus of her campaign. This proactive stance comes in light of the growing public sentiment for regular governmental change.
“Advocating for term limits in the IL General Assembly – it's time for fresh perspectives, new ideas, and accountable leadership. Let's ensure a government that truly represents the people!” Webb said on Facebook.
One notable organization has been persistently advocating for term limits. For years, TermLimits.com has been at the forefront of promoting a shift in government dynamics. The organization aims to foster regular turnover and curb the excessive influence of career politicians. Through the implementation of term limits in Congress, the group envisions a legislative body that prioritizes the needs and concerns of everyday Americans, unencumbered by the entanglements of prolonged political careers.
Intriguingly enough, there was an attempt to limit leadership tenures in recent years. A bill that would have limited House and Senate leadership tenure to 10 years was passed in the House in 2021 but failed to move in the Senate. It was meant to protect Illinoisans from leadership such as that of Michael Madigan, who served 36 years in the role. Madigan will undergo trial in April 2024 on corruption charges related to a $150 million bribery scheme. Current House Speaker Emanuel "Chris" Welch has pledged not to serve more than 10 years in the role according to Illinois Policy.
House District 107 includes Shelby, Christian, Moultrie, Effingham, Macon, Montgomery and Cumberland counties. It is currently represented by State Rep. Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville).
