Last week, Scherer celebrated the news that the state had successfully paid off a $2 billion federal loan earlier than anticipated, saving the state money, according to the Macon Reporter. The loan, which was taken out to help the state stay afloat during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, saw $3.2 billion from the federal government through the CARES Act, its payoff will save the state $82 million in interest.
Scherer, a former teacher, also shared her support regarding a bill designed to attract more teachers to the profession following a shortage of educators in the state. As the main sponsor of bill HB 655, Scherer advocates for the elimination of certain requirements that are considered to be restrictive, such as the state performance test EDTPAs, according to the Sangamon Sun.
"We have to do everything possible to get more teachers and keep those we have," Scherer said, according to the Sangamon Sun.
Back in April of 2021, Scherer was actively promoting the possibility of a zero-emissions power plant created by a partnership between Broadwing Clean Energy Complex, Archer Daniels Midland, and 8 Rivers Capital LLC. The plant would be located within Scherer's legislative district, Decatur, and would be capable of generating 280 megawatts of relatively carbon-neutral power through the process of carbon-capturing, according to South Central Reporter.
